Rafael Aghayev

Rafael Aghayev (born March 4, 1985) is an Azerbaijani karateka. He is a five-time World Karate Champion, and an eleven-time European Karate Champion. Often nicknamed the "Diamond," Aghayev is one of the most decorated karate athletes of all time and is widely recognized for his technical skills, tactical intelligence, and competitive spirit. He competes in the kumite (fighting) division, specifically in the -75 kg weight class.

Aghayev began practicing karate at the age of seven and quickly demonstrated exceptional talent. He has represented Azerbaijan in numerous international competitions, earning a reputation for his dynamic fighting style and precise execution of techniques. His successes have contributed significantly to the popularity of karate in Azerbaijan.

Beyond his individual achievements, Aghayev has also been a vocal advocate for the sport of karate and its inclusion in the Olympic Games. He achieved his long-held goal when karate debuted at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where he won a silver medal, losing to Luigi Busà of Italy in the final.
