Rib vault

A rib vault is a type of vault in Gothic architecture, and later revivals, characterized by a framework of ribs or arches that support the vaulted ceiling. Unlike barrel vaults, which are constructed from a continuous arch, rib vaults are built with intersecting arched ribs. This allows for thinner and lighter infill panels between the ribs, reducing the overall weight and thrust exerted on the walls.

The ribs transfer the weight of the ceiling to specific points, typically piers or columns, concentrating the load and allowing for larger openings in the walls, such as stained glass windows. These ribs can be constructed from stone or other materials and are typically molded or decorated.

There are different types of rib vaults, including quadripartite vaults (divided into four sections) and sexpartite vaults (divided into six sections). The use of rib vaults was a significant development in Gothic architecture, enabling the construction of taller and more complex structures with greater interior light.
