Reutlingen (electoral district)
The Reutlingen electoral district (German: Wahlkreis Reutlingen) is a German Bundestag electoral district in Baden-Württemberg. It is designated as electoral district number 291.
Constituency Area
The Reutlingen electoral district comprises the following municipalities and areas within the Reutlingen district (Landkreis Reutlingen): the towns of Pfullingen, Reutlingen, and Sonnenbühl, and the municipalities of Eningen unter Achalm, Grafenberg, Hülben, Lichtenstein, Neckartenzlingen, Pliezhausen, and Walddorfhäslach.
Electoral History
The electoral district has been consistently represented by members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 1949, with the exception of the 1998 election, which was won by a candidate from the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The CDU has historically held a strong position in this region of Baden-Württemberg.
Procedure
In German Bundestag elections, each voter casts two votes: a first vote (Erststimme) for a direct candidate in their electoral district, and a second vote (Zweitstimme) for a party list in their state. The direct candidate who receives the most first votes in an electoral district wins the seat for that district. The overall composition of the Bundestag is then determined primarily by the second votes cast for party lists, ensuring proportional representation.
