Red Mountain (Ouray County, Colorado)

Red Mountain is a collective name for three distinct peaks – Red Mountain No. 1, Red Mountain No. 2, and Red Mountain No. 3 – located in Ouray County, Colorado, within the San Juan Mountains. These mountains are notable for their intense red and orange coloration, derived from iron oxides formed by extensive hydrothermal alteration related to past volcanic and geothermal activity.

Historically, the Red Mountains played a significant role in Colorado's mining boom during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area was rich in silver, lead, zinc, and copper, leading to the establishment of numerous mining camps and towns, including Ironton and Red Mountain City, which are now largely ghost towns. The Red Mountain Mining District was a prolific producer of ore.

Red Mountain Pass, a high mountain pass traversed by U.S. Highway 550 (the "Million Dollar Highway"), crosses between Red Mountain No. 2 and Red Mountain No. 3. The highway is renowned for its dramatic scenery and challenging driving conditions, particularly during winter. The pass provides access to the area and connects Ouray and Silverton.

The region remains a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including hiking, camping, off-roading, and viewing the remnants of the area's mining history. The altered rock formations, coupled with the high elevation and alpine environment, create a distinctive and visually striking landscape. The area is managed by various entities, including the U.S. Forest Service, to balance resource extraction, recreation, and environmental protection. The area is also known for its potential hazards, including unstable slopes, avalanche danger, and remnants of mining activity like open shafts and tailings.
