Ray Mali
Ray Mali (born 1939) is a South African administrator and businessman. He is best known for his role as the President of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) from 2006 to 2007.
Mali's involvement in rugby administration began long before his presidency. He served in various capacities within rugby structures in the Eastern Cape province during the apartheid era, navigating the challenges of a racially segregated sport. Post-apartheid, he played a key role in the unification of rugby in South Africa.
His presidency of SARU was marked by both success and controversy. South Africa won the 2007 Rugby World Cup during his tenure, a significant achievement for the nation. However, his leadership was also scrutinized, and he faced criticism regarding governance and transformation within the sport. He resigned from his position in late 2007.
Since leaving SARU, Mali has remained involved in business and community development initiatives in the Eastern Cape. He is considered an important figure in the history of South African rugby, particularly for his efforts in promoting inclusivity and development within the sport.
