Qaraqosh

Qaraqosh, also known as Baghdeda or Bakhdida (Syriac: ܒܶܝܬ ܚܰܕܶܐ, Arabic: بغديدا), is a historically Assyrian Christian city located in the Nineveh Plains of northern Iraq. It is situated approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) southeast of Mosul.

History: Qaraqosh boasts a long and rich history, dating back to ancient times. The city has been a significant center for Syriac Christians for centuries, with numerous churches and monasteries located within its boundaries. Throughout its history, Qaraqosh has experienced periods of prosperity and conflict, coming under the rule of various empires and dynasties.

Population: Prior to the 2014 ISIS invasion, Qaraqosh was considered the largest Christian city in Iraq, with a population primarily composed of Syriac Catholics. The city also had a small population of Syriac Orthodox Christians.

2014 ISIS Invasion and Aftermath: In August 2014, ISIS captured Qaraqosh, forcing the vast majority of its Christian population to flee. The city was under ISIS control for over two years, during which time many churches were damaged or destroyed. Qaraqosh was liberated by Iraqi forces in October 2016.

Reconstruction and Return: Following its liberation, efforts have been underway to rebuild Qaraqosh and encourage displaced residents to return. Reconstruction of homes, churches, and infrastructure is ongoing, with support from international organizations and the Iraqi government. While many residents have returned, challenges remain, including security concerns and the need for further reconstruction.

Culture and Religion: Qaraqosh is an important center for Syriac Christian culture and religious traditions. The city has a rich heritage of liturgical music, religious art, and Syriac language. The primary language spoken is Syriac (specifically, a dialect of Northeastern Neo-Aramaic, also known as Suret), in addition to Arabic.
