Puma (kit car company)

The Puma was a British sports car, initially produced as a kit car in the late 1960s. It was based on a GRP (glass reinforced plastic) body mounted on a modified Volkswagen Beetle floorpan and running gear. The design was distinctive, often described as being in the style of an Italian sports car.

Originally produced by Puma Cars, the company subsequently went through various ownership changes. Early models were known for their simplicity and affordability, appealing to home builders looking for a stylish, if basic, sports car. Later iterations saw attempts to improve the design and engineering, with some models offering more sophisticated features.

The Puma enjoyed a period of popularity in the UK kit car market during the 1970s and 1980s. Its relatively low cost, ease of construction, and distinctive appearance contributed to its success. However, the kit car industry experienced significant changes, and the Puma eventually ceased production. Despite this, a dedicated following remains among enthusiasts who restore and maintain existing Pumas.
