La Maison Francaise (Rockefeller Center)
La Maison Francaise, also known as the French Building, is one of the original fourteen buildings that comprise Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Located on Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets, it is situated on the eastern side of the complex.
Designed in the Art Deco style, La Maison Francaise, like its counterpart British Building, is a six-story structure distinguished by its limestone facade and the bas-relief panels adorning its exterior. These panels, created by the sculptor Alfred Janniot, depict scenes representing French culture and industry.
The building served as a hub for French businesses, organizations, and cultural activities. Its purpose was to foster trade and cultural exchange between the United States and France. Over time, the building has housed a variety of commercial tenants, including retail shops and office spaces. It remains a significant architectural landmark within Rockefeller Center, reflecting the international character intended by the original developers.
The name "La Maison Francaise" translates to "The French House" in English.
