Werner Korte (musicologist)
Werner Korte (18 June 1908 – 10 February 1967) was a German musicologist. He is best known for his work on the music of Heinrich Schütz.
Korte studied musicology, art history, and philosophy at the University of Berlin, where he earned his doctorate in 1933 with a dissertation on the early work of Karl Amadeus Hartmann. He subsequently worked as a research assistant at the Staatliches Institut für Deutsche Musikforschung (State Institute for German Music Research) in Berlin.
After World War II, Korte taught at the Pädagogische Hochschule Celle (Teacher Training College of Celle) and later at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover (Hanover University of Music and Drama), where he was appointed professor in 1956.
Korte's scholarship focused primarily on early music, particularly the music of Heinrich Schütz. His comprehensive biography and thematic catalogue of Schütz's works, Heinrich Schütz (1937), remains a standard reference work. He also published extensively on other topics in music history, including German organ music and the relationship between music and other arts.
