Sea Level (band)

Sea Level was an American rock band formed in 1977 by Chuck Leavell, Lamar Williams, and Jaimoe, all former members of The Allman Brothers Band. Formed after The Allman Brothers Band temporarily disbanded in 1976, Sea Level allowed these musicians to further explore their jazz fusion and funk influences, elements that had been present but less prominent in their previous work.

The band’s initial lineup also included guitarist Jimmy Nalls and drummer Joe English (later replaced by George Weaver). Sea Level released five studio albums: Sea Level (1977), Cats on the Coast (1977), On the Edge (1978), Long Walk on a Short Pier (1979), and Ball Room (1980). Their music blended elements of Southern rock, jazz, blues, and funk, creating a distinctive sound characterized by complex instrumental arrangements and improvisation.

While Sea Level never achieved the same level of commercial success as The Allman Brothers Band, they gained a dedicated following and were praised for their musicianship. Their albums showcased Leavell’s keyboard virtuosity, Williams’s strong bass lines, and Jaimoe’s distinctive drumming style. The band toured extensively throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, further solidifying their reputation as a skilled and energetic live act.

Sea Level disbanded in 1981. Chuck Leavell went on to a successful career as a touring keyboardist with The Rolling Stones, and Lamar Williams passed away in 1983. Despite their relatively short lifespan, Sea Level remains a significant chapter in the history of Southern rock and a testament to the musical talents of its members.
