Empathy (Bill Evans and Shelly Manne album)
Empathy is a jazz album by pianist Bill Evans and drummer Shelly Manne, released in 1962 on the Verve label. The recording session took place on August 14, 1962, in New York City. The album features a quartet, with Monty Budwig on bass and previously uncredited arrangements by Gary McFarland.
The album consists of six tracks, primarily standards and jazz compositions. It is noted for its interplay between Evans' lyrical piano style and Manne's subtle yet driving drumming. While Evans frequently worked in trios, Empathy marks a relatively rare instance of him recording extensively in a quartet setting outside of his collaborations with Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis earlier in his career.
The tracklist includes notable tunes such as "The Washington Twist," "Danny Boy," and "I Believe in You." The album received positive reviews upon its release and continues to be regarded as a solid entry in both Evans' and Manne's discographies. The inclusion of McFarland's uncredited arrangements adds an additional layer of complexity and interest to the recordings.
