Puddle (video game)
Puddle is a physics-based puzzle platformer video game developed by French independent studio Neko Entertainment. The game centers around guiding a liquid (the "puddle" of the title) through a series of intricate and often hazardous environments by tilting the game's world.
Gameplay
Players do not directly control the liquid puddle. Instead, they manipulate the environment by tilting the game world left or right, utilizing the game's physics engine to influence the liquid's movement. The goal in each level is to guide the puddle to a designated exit point, overcoming obstacles such as heat sources, cracks, and various traps that can evaporate, absorb, or otherwise diminish the amount of liquid the player controls. Different levels feature different types of liquids, each possessing unique properties that affect gameplay. Some liquids are flammable, others are corrosive, and some are more viscous or prone to evaporation. Successful completion of a level often requires careful management of the liquid's volume and understanding its properties in relation to the environmental hazards.
Development
Puddle began as a student project at the ENJMIN (École Nationale du Jeu et des Médias Interactifs Numériques) in France. The concept was later refined and expanded into a full commercial game.
Release
Puddle was initially released in 2012 on various platforms, including PlayStation 3 (via PlayStation Network), Xbox 360 (via Xbox Live Arcade), PlayStation Vita, PC, and iOS. Different versions and editions of the game have been released, including HD remasters.
Reception
Puddle received mixed to positive reviews upon release. Critics generally praised the game's unique gameplay mechanics and challenging level design, while some criticized its difficulty and occasionally unforgiving physics. The visual style and overall presentation were also commonly noted.
