Provenance (album)

Provenance is the fourth studio album by the British progressive rock band Caravan, released in May 1973. It followed their commercially successful album Waterloo Lily.

The album marked a change in lineup, with John G. Perry replacing Richard Sinclair on bass. Musically, Provenance showcased a more jazz-influenced sound compared to Caravan's earlier work, although it retained elements of their characteristic Canterbury scene style. The album features extended instrumental sections and complex arrangements.

Reception to Provenance was mixed upon its release. While some critics praised the band's musicianship and experimentation, others felt that the album lacked the melodic focus and accessibility of its predecessors. Despite not achieving the same commercial success as Waterloo Lily, Provenance has since been recognized as a significant and influential work in the progressive rock genre. Key tracks include "Golf Girl," a rerecorded version of a song from their first album, and the extended composition "A Hunting Scene for Narrator and Orchestra."
