Pollock

Pollock refers primarily to two species of North Pacific fish within the cod family (Gadidae). It can also refer to other, less common usages detailed below.

1. Alaska Pollock ( Gadus chalcogrammus or Theragra chalcogramma): This is the most common usage of the term "Pollock." Also known as walleye pollock, it is a semi-pelagic schooling fish abundant in the North Pacific Ocean, particularly the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and Sea of Okhotsk. It is a significant component of the marine ecosystem and a commercially important fish species, often used in fish sticks, imitation crab meat (surimi), and fast food fish sandwiches. Its mild flavor and relatively low cost contribute to its widespread consumption. Sustainable fishing practices are a major concern in managing Alaska Pollock populations.

2. Saithe ( Pollachius virens): Also known as coley or Boston bluefish, this fish, while related to Alaska Pollock, is a distinct species found in the North Atlantic Ocean. While still considered a type of pollock, it is often marketed and sold under its own name.

3. Surname: "Pollock" is also a surname of Scottish and Irish origin. It is a variant of the Gaelic name "Pollag," which is a diminutive of "Poll," meaning "pool" or "pond."

4. Jackson Pollock (1912-1956): This refers to the influential American painter Jackson Pollock, known for his abstract expressionist style, particularly his "drip painting" technique. He is a significant figure in 20th-century art history. Referring to the artist by only the surname is common, so "Pollock" can imply Jackson Pollock within an artistic context.
