Peter Hansen (politician)
Peter Hansen (born c. 1960) is an Australian politician who served as a Senator for Queensland from 1996 to 1999, representing Pauline Hanson's One Nation party.
Hansen was elected to the Senate at the 1996 federal election, gaining significant support amidst rising anti-immigration sentiment. His political platform focused on reducing immigration levels, particularly from Asian countries, and advocating for the rights of Australian primary producers. He often spoke out against multiculturalism and argued for a return to traditional Australian values.
During his time in the Senate, Hansen was a controversial figure. His outspoken views on race and immigration drew widespread criticism from other politicians and community groups. He frequently clashed with members of the other parties and was often accused of racism and xenophobia.
In 1999, Hansen was convicted of electoral fraud related to the signing of nomination forms prior to the 1996 election. He was subsequently disqualified from the Senate. Although he initially appealed the conviction, it was upheld, and he was imprisoned.
Following his release from prison, Hansen remained active in right-wing political circles. He attempted to re-enter parliament on several occasions, but was unsuccessful. He has continued to publicly express his views on immigration and multiculturalism. His political activities and statements continue to generate considerable debate and controversy in Australia.
