Pergase

Pergase (also sometimes spelled Pergases in older texts) is an archaic term, primarily found in historical texts relating to alchemy and early chemistry. It refers to a volatile, supposedly universal solvent believed to be capable of dissolving all substances.

The concept of Pergase is closely linked to the broader alchemical pursuit of the Philosopher's Stone and the Universal Medicine (Panacea). It was theorized that if such a solvent could be produced, it would unlock the secrets of transmutation and grant immortality.

While no substance corresponding to the description of Pergase has ever been scientifically discovered or synthesized, the idea played a role in shaping early chemical thought. Alchemists and early scientists dedicated considerable effort to creating or identifying such a solvent, often through complex and esoteric processes. The search for Pergase, and similar universal solvents like Alkahest, reflects a belief in the fundamental unity of matter and the possibility of achieving extraordinary transformations through chemical means.

The term is rarely used in modern scientific contexts, having been superseded by more precise chemical terminology and a better understanding of the nature of solvents and solutions. However, it remains a historical curiosity, offering insight into the development of scientific thinking.
