Penknife

A penknife, also commonly called a pocketknife, is a type of folding knife, small enough to be easily carried in a pocket. Historically, the term "penknife" specifically referred to a small knife used for cutting and sharpening quill pens. With the advent of steel-nibbed pens and later, ballpoint pens and fountain pens, the original function of the penknife became obsolete. However, the name persisted and is now used generally to describe any small, folding knife.

Penknives are typically designed for general utility purposes and often feature one or more blades folding into the handle. Beyond a primary blade, common features can include small scissors, a can opener, a bottle opener, a screwdriver, a corkscrew, and other specialized tools. The size, blade shape, materials, and features of penknives vary widely depending on the intended use and manufacturer.

While frequently used for everyday tasks, penknives are also popular tools for camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Depending on local laws, there may be restrictions on the carry and use of penknives, especially regarding blade length and locking mechanisms. Some jurisdictions consider certain types of folding knives to be prohibited weapons.
