Patrick Morris (merchant)

Patrick Morris (1792 – 1849) was a prominent Irish-Newfoundlander merchant and politician based in St. John's, Newfoundland. Born in Waterford, Ireland, he immigrated to Newfoundland around 1810, joining his uncle's mercantile firm, Morris & Co. He quickly rose to prominence in the business community, becoming a leading figure in the cod fishing industry and expanding into shipbuilding and other ventures.

Morris was a key advocate for responsible government in Newfoundland. He played a significant role in the movement for political reform, believing that the colony should have more control over its own affairs rather than being directly governed by appointed officials in London. He actively participated in public debates and used his influence within the merchant community to advance the cause of representative government.
