Parkway Village (Queens)
Parkway Village is a housing cooperative located in Briarwood, Queens, New York City. Developed by the United Housing Foundation (UHF) and financed under the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program, it was completed in 1947. Parkway Village was designed to provide affordable housing for returning World War II veterans and their families.
The complex is notable for its garden apartment layout, featuring low-rise brick buildings spread across a landscaped area. This design differed from the more common high-rise public housing projects of the time, and aimed to create a more suburban and community-oriented living environment. The cooperative consists of approximately 675 apartments spread across multiple buildings.
Parkway Village is bordered by Queens Boulevard to the south, 77th Avenue to the north, Union Turnpike to the east, and Grand Central Parkway to the west. Its location provides convenient access to transportation, including the E and F subway lines at the nearby Union Turnpike – Kew Gardens station.
Over the years, Parkway Village has transitioned from its initial purpose of veteran housing to a more diverse community. It remains a significant example of post-war cooperative housing development in New York City and continues to provide affordable housing options in a desirable location. The cooperative is managed by a board of directors elected by the shareholders.
