Florence Island (Antarctica)

Florence Island is a small island located in the eastern part of Vincennes Bay, off the Budd Coast of Wilkes Land, Antarctica. It lies approximately 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) west-southwest of Peterson Island.

The island is generally rocky and ice-covered, although some ice-free areas may exist, particularly during the Antarctic summer. It is part of a larger group of islands and rocky outcrops scattered along this section of the Budd Coast.

Florence Island was first mapped from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump in 1946-47. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Florence H. Bryant, a cartographer with the U.S. Hydrographic Office, who specialized in the compilation of Antarctic maps.

The island's significance primarily lies in its geographical location within Vincennes Bay and as a landmark within the Budd Coast region. It contributes to the overall biodiversity and ecological characteristics of the Antarctic environment, although specific research focusing solely on Florence Island may be limited.
