Paangari
Paangari is a traditional, unmotorized water transport vessel primarily used in the backwaters and rivers of Kerala, India. It is a type of small canoe, typically carved from a single log of wood, often teak or a similar durable timber.
Paangaris are characterized by their narrow, elongated shape and low freeboard, making them highly maneuverable in shallow waters. They are propelled by paddling, usually using a single paddle for steering and propulsion. While similar to other dugout canoes, the Paangari distinguishes itself through regional variations in design and construction.
These boats are traditionally used for fishing, transporting goods, and ferrying people across short distances in areas where larger boats cannot easily navigate. They are an integral part of the local culture and economy in many parts of Kerala. The skill of crafting and using a Paangari is often passed down through generations. Due to the increased availability of motorized boats, the use of traditional Paangaris is slowly declining, though they still hold cultural significance and are sometimes used for recreational purposes.
