Półgrosz

A półgrosz (plural: półgrosze) was a Polish silver coin in circulation from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The name literally translates to "half-grosz," indicating its value as half that of a grosz (groat). The półgrosz was introduced during the reign of King Władysław II Jagiełło and became a significant part of the Polish monetary system.

The półgrosz coin was typically smaller and lighter than the grosz. The design usually featured the Polish coat of arms (the White Eagle) and inscriptions related to the reigning monarch. The silver content varied over time, reflecting changes in economic conditions and royal policy.

The półgrosz facilitated everyday transactions and was widely used by merchants and the general population. Its introduction helped to standardize currency within the Polish kingdom and contribute to economic growth. Eventually, the półgrosz was superseded by other denominations, but it remains an important artifact in the study of Polish numismatics and medieval history. Its value, relative to other contemporary currencies, is often referenced in historical economic analyses.
