Péricles (cartoonist)
Péricles de Andrade Moreira de Souza (30 October 1924 – 31 December 1961) was a Brazilian cartoonist, humorist, and journalist. He is best known for creating the iconic character O Amigo da Onça (The Jaguar's Friend), which appeared in the popular Brazilian magazine O Cruzeiro.
Péricles began his career in the press at a young age, working for various publications. He joined O Cruzeiro in 1945, where he developed O Amigo da Onça, a mischievous and often unscrupulous character who became a symbol of Brazilian humor and satire. The character's popularity was immense, and it appeared in O Cruzeiro for many years.
Beyond O Amigo da Onça, Péricles was a prolific cartoonist who created other memorable characters and contributed to the development of Brazilian comics. He was known for his sharp wit and his ability to capture the essence of Brazilian society in his work.
Péricles died prematurely at the age of 37, leaving behind a significant legacy in Brazilian cartooning. His work continues to be admired and studied for its humor, social commentary, and artistic skill. He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Brazilian comics.
