Whadjuk
Whadjuk, also spelled Whadjuk, is the name of one of the fourteen Noongar language groups of southwestern Australia. They are the traditional owners of the Perth metropolitan area, the Swan Coastal Plain north to Gingin, and east to the Darling Scarp.
The Whadjuk people identify as Aboriginal Australians and are part of the larger Noongar cultural and linguistic group. Their territory includes significant geographical features such as the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), the Garlett Brook, and the Mooro Brook.
The Whadjuk people have a deep and continuing connection to their land and maintain a living culture that is passed down through generations. Traditional knowledge, customs, and spiritual beliefs are integral to their identity. Contemporary Whadjuk people are actively involved in land management, cultural preservation, and community development.
Recognition of Whadjuk ownership and custodianship of their traditional lands is increasingly acknowledged in government policies and community initiatives. The Whadjuk people continue to advocate for their rights and interests within Western Australia.
