Orchard Beach (Bronx)
Orchard Beach, often referred to as "The Bronx Riviera," is a public beach located on the western end of Long Island Sound in the Bronx borough of New York City. Built in the 1930s under the direction of Robert Moses, it was intended to be "the Riviera of New York."
The beach is characterized by its 1.1-mile-long (1.8 km) sandy shore, a marked departure from the naturally rocky shoreline of the area. The sand was imported. A central pavilion provides amenities such as food vendors and restrooms. The beach also features a promenade, playgrounds, picnic areas, and various sports facilities, including basketball, volleyball, and handball courts.
Orchard Beach is a popular destination for residents of the Bronx and surrounding areas, particularly during the summer months. It offers recreational opportunities and serves as a community gathering place. The beach is accessible by car and public transportation, including the Bx12 SBS bus route.
Over the years, Orchard Beach has faced challenges related to maintenance and funding. Efforts have been made to improve the beach's infrastructure and restore its original grandeur. The City of New York Parks & Recreation Department manages and maintains the site.
