Furness

Furness is a geographical region located in the county of Cumbria, in North West England. Historically, it formed part of Lancashire "north of the sands" (referring to the tidal sands of Morecambe Bay).

Geography:

Furness is a peninsula bordered by Morecambe Bay to the south, the Irish Sea to the west, and the Duddon Estuary and Lake District mountains to the north and east. The region includes the towns of Barrow-in-Furness, Ulverston, Dalton-in-Furness, and Grange-over-Sands. It is characterised by a varied landscape encompassing coastal areas, agricultural land, and moorland.

History:

The area has a rich history, evidenced by prehistoric remains and Roman influence. The name "Furness" is believed to derive from "Futherness," meaning "further nose" or "promontory." Furness Abbey, founded in 1127, was a significant Cistercian monastery that played a crucial role in the area's development. During the Industrial Revolution, Barrow-in-Furness transformed from a small village into a major shipbuilding and iron-producing centre.

Economy:

Historically reliant on shipbuilding, iron and steel industries, and mining, the Furness economy has diversified in recent decades. Current key sectors include advanced manufacturing, engineering, tourism, and the service industry. The BAE Systems submarine building facility in Barrow-in-Furness remains a significant employer.

Governance:

Administratively, Furness is part of the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority.

Culture:

Furness has a distinct identity, reflecting its geographical isolation and historical connections. Local traditions and dialects persist. The region's proximity to the Lake District National Park makes it a popular destination for outdoor activities.
