Onogošt (župa)

Onogošt was a župa (county) in medieval Serbia. The area roughly corresponds to modern-day Nikšić and its surrounding region in Montenegro. It was a significant administrative and territorial unit within various Serbian medieval states, including the Principality of Duklja, the Grand Principality of Serbia, and the Serbian Empire. The župa's importance stemmed from its strategic location and agricultural productivity.

Historical sources mention Onogošt in connection with conflicts and power struggles between different Serbian rulers and neighboring polities. The name "Onogošt" is likely derived from an older Slavic toponym. The župa was eventually incorporated into the Ottoman Empire. The fortress of Onogošt, later known as Nikšić Fortress, was a key strategic point within the region.
