Old Stadion (Amsterdam)
The Old Stadion (Dutch: Het Oude Stadion), also known as the Olympisch Stadion, is a former stadium located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was the main stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics.
Designed by architect Jan Wils, the stadium is considered a prime example of Amsterdam School architecture. After the Olympics, it remained in use for various sporting events, primarily football (soccer) and athletics. It served as the home ground for AFC Ajax for many years, until the opening of the Amsterdam ArenA (now Johan Cruijff ArenA) in 1996.
Following Ajax's departure, the stadium faced potential demolition. However, strong public support led to its preservation and renovation. The renovated stadium retained its historical features while being adapted for modern use.
Today, the Old Stadion is a multi-purpose venue that hosts a variety of events, including sports tournaments, concerts, and corporate gatherings. It also houses a museum dedicated to the history of the stadium and the 1928 Olympics. The stadium is a designated national monument and remains a significant landmark in Amsterdam.
