Neurergus

Neurergus is a genus of salamanders in the family Salamandridae, commonly known as newts. These newts are found in the Middle East, specifically in areas of Turkey, Iran, and Iraq.

They are characterized by their relatively small size (typically around 10-15 cm in total length) and aquatic lifestyle, particularly during breeding season. Neurergus newts inhabit streams and pools in mountainous regions.

The genus Neurergus currently comprises four recognized species:

• Neurergus crocatus (Lake Urmia Newt or Yellow-spotted Newt)
• Neurergus kaiseri (Kaiser's Spotted Newt)
• Neurergus microspilotus (Kurdistan Newt)
• Neurergus strauchii (Anatolian Newt)

Several Neurergus species, most notably N. kaiseri, are highly sought after in the pet trade due to their vibrant coloration and relatively small size. However, this demand, coupled with habitat loss and degradation, has led to significant population declines and conservation concerns. N. kaiseri is critically endangered.

Conservation efforts are underway to protect Neurergus newts and their habitats. These efforts include captive breeding programs, habitat restoration, and stricter regulations on the trade of these animals. Accurate identification of species is crucial for effective conservation management. Further research is ongoing to better understand the distribution, ecology, and population genetics of Neurergus species.
