National United Party (Armenia)

The National United Party (NUP) was an Armenian nationalist political party active primarily in the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic during the Soviet era. Founded in 1966 by Haykaz Khachatryan and later led by Paruyr Hayrikyan, the NUP advocated for Armenian national self-determination, including the eventual secession of Armenia from the Soviet Union and the establishment of an independent Armenian state.

The party operated clandestinely due to the Soviet Union's suppression of dissent and nationalist movements. It focused on disseminating information about Armenian history, culture, and grievances under Soviet rule, aiming to raise national consciousness among the Armenian population. The NUP faced significant repression from the Soviet authorities, with many of its members arrested, imprisoned, or exiled for their political activities.

Paruyr Hayrikyan, a prominent figure within the party, played a key role in its organizational efforts and advocacy for Armenian independence. His activism and repeated arrests brought international attention to the plight of Armenian nationalists within the Soviet Union.

While the NUP existed primarily as an underground movement, its ideals and activities contributed to the growing momentum for Armenian independence during the late 1980s. Following Armenia's declaration of independence in 1991, the NUP transitioned into a legal political party and participated in the post-Soviet Armenian political landscape. However, its influence gradually waned over time. The legacy of the NUP lies in its role as a key driver of the Armenian national movement during the Soviet period and its contribution to the eventual realization of Armenian independence.
