Muttsee
Muttsee is a high-altitude lake located in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland. Situated at an elevation of 2,476 meters (8,123 feet) above sea level, it is known for being the source of the Linth River. The lake's formation is largely artificial, expanded significantly by the construction of the Muttsee Dam, a part of the Linth–Limmern power plants, a large-scale hydroelectric power project. Prior to the dam, a much smaller natural lake existed in the same location. The lake's primary function is as a reservoir for pumped-storage hydroelectricity, allowing for the storage of excess energy for later use. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rugged alpine terrain, glaciers, and sparse vegetation typical of high-altitude environments. Access to Muttsee is typically via hiking trails, cable cars, and other mountain transportation systems. Due to its remote location and altitude, the lake experiences a short summer season and often remains frozen for much of the year.
