Mussorgskij (crater)

Mussorgskij is a large lunar impact crater located on the far side of the Moon. It lies to the northwest of the prominent crater Tsiolkovskiy, and northeast of the crater Evershed.

The crater is named after the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881).

Mussorgskij is a heavily eroded and degraded crater formation. Its outer rim is irregular and uneven, with several smaller craters lying along the rim and within the interior. The crater floor is relatively level, but is marked by a number of smaller craters and some areas of rough terrain. There is a central peak complex located near the crater's midpoint, representing material uplifted during the impact event. Due to its location on the far side of the Moon, Mussorgskij is not visible from Earth and was first imaged by lunar probes.
