Muntenia

Muntenia, also known as Greater Wallachia, is a historical region of Romania. It is situated between the Southern Carpathians (to the north), the Danube River (to the south and east), and the Olt River (to the west).

Historically, Muntenia was one of the two principalities that united in 1859 to form the United Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, which later became Romania. Its historical capital was Târgoviște, later replaced by Bucharest.

The region encompasses major cities such as Bucharest (Romania's capital), Ploiești, Târgoviște, and Giurgiu. Muntenia is typically divided into two subregions: Oltenia (Lesser Wallachia) and Muntenia proper (Greater Wallachia), although Oltenia is often considered a separate historical region.

Economically, Muntenia is a vital region, containing Bucharest, a major economic and industrial center. Agriculture is also significant, particularly in the Danube plain.

Culturally, Muntenia shares many traditions with the rest of Romania, but also possesses unique characteristics influenced by its history and geographic location. The Romanian language spoken in Muntenia serves as a basis for the standard Romanian language.
