Muhurta
A Muhurta (मुहूर्त) is a unit of time in Hindu tradition. It represents a specific period within a day and night, used in Hindu astrology (Jyotisha) to determine auspicious timings for various activities.
Traditionally, a day (daytime) and night (nighttime) are each divided into 15 Muhurtas, totaling 30 Muhurtas in a complete 24-hour period. Each Muhurta is approximately equivalent to 48 minutes (24 hours * 60 minutes / 30 Muhurtas). However, the exact duration can vary slightly depending on the sunrise and sunset times at a particular location and date.
Different Muhurtas are considered suitable or unsuitable for different kinds of activities. Auspicious Muhurtas are often selected for important events like weddings, starting new ventures, performing religious ceremonies, and traveling. Inauspicious Muhurtas are generally avoided for such activities.
The names and characteristics of the 30 Muhurtas vary and are detailed in various astrological texts. The selection of a Muhurta for a particular activity is based on various factors, including the planetary positions, the day of the week, and the specific purpose for which the Muhurta is being considered. The process of selecting an auspicious Muhurta is often done by a qualified astrologer.
