Ben Nevis (horse)
Ben Nevis was a New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who achieved significant success in steeplechasing, most notably winning the 1980 Grand National at Aintree Racecourse in England. Trained by John Thorne and ridden by Charlie Fenwick, Ben Nevis was the first American-owned horse to win the Grand National since 1938.
Foaled in 1972, Ben Nevis was initially raced in New Zealand before being purchased by American Redmond C. Stewart Jr. Stewart then sent the horse to be trained in the United States. While showing some promise, Ben Nevis did not reach the highest levels of racing in America.
The decision was made to send Ben Nevis to England to compete in steeplechases. The Grand National, a gruelling handicap steeplechase over four miles and 856 yards, was the ultimate goal.
In the 1980 Grand National, Ben Nevis started at odds of 40-1. He ran a strong race, staying out of trouble and demonstrating excellent jumping ability. He ultimately prevailed in a close finish, defeating the Irish horse Rough And Tumble.
Ben Nevis's victory was a popular one, particularly due to his American ownership and his underdog status. He became a well-known and celebrated racehorse.
After his Grand National victory, Ben Nevis returned to the United States, where he enjoyed a retirement that included appearances at equestrian events. He died in 1989.
