Mount Ord (Arizona)
Mount Ord is a mountain located in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona, approximately 40 miles northeast of Phoenix. It is situated in the Mazatzal Mountains and is the highest point in the southern Mazatzal range. Its summit elevation is 7,128 feet (2,173 meters).
The mountain is accessible via Forest Road 419, often referred to as the Mount Ord Road, which branches off State Route 87 (the Beeline Highway). This road is generally passable by passenger vehicles, although high clearance is recommended in some sections, especially after periods of rain or snow.
Mount Ord offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Phoenix metropolitan area, the Superstition Mountains, and the Mogollon Rim. It is a popular destination for hiking, picnicking, and stargazing. Due to its elevation, it offers a cooler climate than the lower desert regions, making it a welcome escape during the hot summer months.
The summit is equipped with a United States Forest Service fire lookout tower, which is sometimes staffed during periods of high fire danger. The mountain's slopes are covered in a mix of pine, oak, and juniper vegetation. Wildlife in the area includes deer, javelina, black bears, and a variety of bird species.
