Monkgate

Monkgate is a street and former gate in the city walls of York, England. It is located on the northeastern side of the city centre.

Monkgate refers both to the street itself and to the location where the gate once stood. The street extends northeastwards from the junction with Lord Mayor's Walk and St. Maurice's Road, eventually leading out of the city centre towards Heworth.

The gate, Monk Bar, still stands and is one of the four main medieval gateways into York. It is the tallest and most elaborate of the four bars.

The name "Monkgate" is believed to derive from the monks of St. Mary's Abbey, as the gate provided access to lands and properties owned by the abbey outside the city walls. The gate was historically a significant entry point into York, facilitating trade and travel. Today, Monk Bar houses a Richard III Experience museum. The area around Monkgate contains a mix of residential, commercial, and historical buildings.
