Molly (1999 film)
Molly is a 1999 American comedy-drama film directed by John Duigan and starring Elisabeth Shue, Aaron Eckhart, and Jill Hennessy. The film follows the story of Molly McKay (Shue), an autistic woman who is placed in the care of her yuppie brother, Buck (Eckhart), after living in an institution her entire life. Buck, initially reluctant, discovers that Molly possesses artistic talents and, with the help of a neurosurgeon, Dr. Susan Brookes (Hennessy), attempts an experimental procedure to "cure" her autism.
The film explores themes of family, responsibility, and the ethical considerations surrounding medical treatments for disabilities. It received generally negative reviews upon its release, with critics questioning the film's portrayal of autism and its scientific inaccuracies. The film was also a box office disappointment. Despite its criticisms, Molly sparked some discussion regarding the representation of individuals with developmental disabilities in mainstream cinema.
