Mohammed Bello (jurist)

Mohammed Bello (1930-2004) was a prominent Nigerian jurist who served as the Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1987 to 1995. He was a highly respected figure in the Nigerian legal system and played a significant role in shaping its development during a period of political and social transition.

Bello was born in Katsina State, Nigeria. He received his early education in Katsina and later studied law at the University of London and the Council of Legal Education, England. He was called to the English Bar in 1955 and returned to Nigeria to begin his legal career.

He served in various judicial capacities, including as a Magistrate, a Judge of the High Court, and a Justice of the Supreme Court before being appointed Chief Justice. As Chief Justice, Bello was responsible for the administration of the Nigerian judiciary and presided over numerous landmark cases. He was known for his commitment to judicial independence and integrity.

His tenure as Chief Justice coincided with significant political upheaval in Nigeria, including military rule and transitions towards civilian government.
