Modillion

A modillion is an ornamental bracket, usually appearing in a series under the cornice of a Classical building. More specifically, modillions are characteristic of the Corinthian and Composite orders. They resemble ornate, stylized supporting brackets and are generally spaced at regular intervals.

Modillions are often carved with acanthus leaves or other decorative motifs, and can vary significantly in their shape and detail, depending on the architectural style and the intentions of the architect or builder. They project outwards from the wall, providing a visually appealing and rhythmic feature to the building's facade. While they appear to provide structural support to the cornice, their function is primarily decorative.

The use of modillions distinguishes itself from dentils, another type of decorative block found under cornices. While both elements serve a similar aesthetic purpose, modillions are generally larger, more projecting, and more ornate than dentils, which are typically smaller and rectangular. Modillions also tend to be associated with more elaborate architectural styles than dentils.
