Mike Boit

Mike Boit (born January 15, 1949) is a retired Kenyan middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800 and 1500 metres. He is considered one of Kenya's greatest athletes.

Boit's career spanned the late 1960s and 1970s. He won a bronze medal in the 800 metres at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. He was heavily favored to win a medal, possibly gold, at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal but was prevented from competing due to the Kenyan boycott of the Games in protest against New Zealand's sporting contacts with apartheid-era South Africa. This boycott deprived Boit, arguably at his peak, of another opportunity for Olympic glory.

Beyond the Olympics, Boit won gold medals at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, in the 800 metres and at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada, in the 1500 metres.

After retiring from competitive running, Boit transitioned to academia. He earned a PhD in education and has held professorships at various Kenyan universities, including Kenyatta University. He has also been involved in sports administration, working to develop athletics in Kenya. He remains a prominent figure in Kenyan sporting history and is often cited as an inspiration for younger generations of Kenyan athletes.
