Mike Barrett (basketball)
Michael "Mike" Barrett (born September 5, 1943, in Montgomery, West Virginia, died August 8, 2011, in Nashville, Tennessee) was an American basketball player.
A 6'2" guard, Barrett played collegiately at West Virginia University. He was a member of the gold medal-winning United States men's basketball team at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He scored 42 points in 9 games played at the Olympics.
Barrett was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the 1966 NBA draft (6th round, 52nd overall) and by the Oakland Oaks in the 1967 ABA draft. However, he did not play professionally in either league. Instead, he pursued a career in education, becoming a teacher and coach.
Following his playing career, Barrett remained active in the basketball community, coaching youth leagues and mentoring young players. He also worked as a school administrator.
Barrett was inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. His contributions to the sport at both the collegiate and Olympic levels are remembered and celebrated.
