Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (India)

The Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) is the senior-most medical officer in the Indian Armed Forces. The DGAFMS is responsible for providing comprehensive healthcare to serving and retired personnel of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as their dependents. The office oversees the medical, dental, and nursing services within the military, ensuring their readiness and effectiveness.

The DGAFMS heads the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), a unified medical service comprising medical, dental, nursing and para-medical personnel. The role involves policy formulation, planning, and implementation of medical services across the three branches of the armed forces. This includes overseeing military hospitals, medical research, medical education, and public health initiatives within the armed forces community.

The DGAFMS reports to the Ministry of Defence and advises the government on matters pertaining to military health. The office plays a vital role in disaster relief operations and humanitarian assistance, providing medical support both domestically and internationally. The DGAFMS also interacts with other national and international health organizations.
