Mexicana de Aviación (2023–present)
Mexicana de Aviación (2023–present) is a state-owned airline of Mexico, relaunched in December 2023 under the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. It is distinct from the original Mexicana de Aviación, which ceased operations in 2010. The relaunched airline aims to provide affordable air travel within Mexico and to select international destinations, with a focus on routes underserved by other airlines.
The airline is operated by Grupo Mexicana de Aviación, a holding company managed by the Mexican Ministry of Defense (SEDENA). It operates a fleet of Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with plans to expand its fleet over time. Key operational hubs include Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) in Mexico City.
The creation of the new Mexicana de Aviación is part of the Mexican government's broader strategy to improve air connectivity and stimulate economic development in various regions of the country. It also seeks to provide an alternative to the existing commercial airlines, potentially influencing fares and service quality.
Initial destinations served included several major Mexican cities, and plans are underway to expand to international locations.
