SM UB-88

SM UB-88 was a German Type UB III submarine, or U-boat, of the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) during World War I. Commissioned on January 16, 1918, it was commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Karl Dobberstein.

UB-88 conducted several war patrols, operating primarily in the English Channel and surrounding waters, targeting Allied merchant shipping. It is credited with sinking a number of vessels during its service.

Notable actions involving UB-88 include attacks on convoys and individual ships. Specific details regarding the tonnage sunk and the circumstances surrounding each attack are well-documented in naval records of the period. The submarine posed a significant threat to Allied shipping lanes, contributing to the U-boat campaign aimed at disrupting supplies to Britain and France.

After the Armistice in November 1918, UB-88 surrendered to the Allied forces. It was subsequently scrapped as part of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which aimed to dismantle the German U-boat fleet. Details of its decommissioning and eventual destruction are recorded in various historical accounts and naval archives.

The wartime activities of UB-88 and its crew are a part of the broader history of submarine warfare during World War I and highlight the strategic importance of U-boats in naval conflicts.
