Mesola
Mesola is a town and comune (municipality) in the Province of Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It is situated approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Bologna and about 60 kilometers east of Ferrara, in the Po Delta Regional Park.
Historically, Mesola is known for the Bosco della Mesola, a large hunting preserve that once belonged to the Este family, rulers of Ferrara. The remaining woodland is now a protected area within the Po Delta Park and provides habitat for the endangered Mesola Deer (also known as the Delta Deer), a distinct subspecies of red deer.
The town's primary economic activities include agriculture, particularly the cultivation of rice and cereals, and tourism related to the natural environment and historical sites. The Castello Estense di Mesola, a Renaissance-era castle built by the Este family, is a prominent landmark and tourist attraction. The castle originally served as a hunting lodge and residence for the Dukes of Ferrara. The town also features several churches and smaller historic buildings.
