Mannan (caste)

The Mannan are a tribal community primarily found in the Indian state of Kerala. They are classified as a Scheduled Tribe by the government of India. Their traditional occupation involves agriculture, particularly cultivating hill paddy and other crops. Forest produce collection also plays a significant role in their economy.

The Mannan community has its own distinct social customs and traditions, including traditional forms of dance, music, and rituals. Their language, also called Mannan, is related to Malayalam. They generally live in settlements called kudis located in forest areas.

Historically, the Mannan had a traditional council headed by a Moopan (chief) who played a significant role in resolving disputes and governing community affairs. This traditional system is gradually being influenced by modern governance structures.

Contemporary challenges faced by the Mannan community include land alienation, limited access to education and healthcare, and the impact of deforestation on their traditional livelihoods. Various government initiatives and non-governmental organizations are working to improve the socio-economic conditions of the Mannan and preserve their cultural heritage.
