Meo (ethnic group)

The term "Meo" is a designation historically used in some Southeast Asian countries, primarily in Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and Myanmar, to refer to various highland ethnic groups. It is often used synonymously with "Hmong," although this equivalence is not universally accepted or accurate.

The usage of "Meo" is complex and often carries negative connotations. While some individuals and groups may self-identify using this term, many Hmong people find it derogatory and prefer the name "Hmong," which translates to "free people."

The term's origin is disputed. Some sources suggest it is derived from a Chinese term. Regardless of its etymology, its application has been inconsistent and often imposed by dominant lowland populations. This imposition contributes to its problematic connotations.

Due to the pejorative associations and inaccuracies inherent in its application, the term "Meo" is generally discouraged in academic and respectful discourse. The preferred and more accurate term is "Hmong" when referring to this ethnic group. Acknowledging the specific subgroup and geographical location can further improve accuracy and respect, for example, "White Hmong from Laos."
