Medusa (band)

Medusa was a British progressive rock band formed in 1969 and active primarily during the early 1970s. The band featured John McCoy on guitar, Bernie Bell on vocals, Rob Ware on bass, and Frank Newbold on drums. Their music blended hard rock elements with progressive instrumentation and song structures.

The band released two albums during their active period: First Step (1972) and Medusa (1973). First Step is considered a heavier, more blues-influenced album, while Medusa showcased a more developed progressive rock sound. Both albums received some critical acclaim but did not achieve significant commercial success.

Medusa toured extensively in the UK and Europe, supporting bands such as Black Sabbath and Gentle Giant. Despite a growing cult following, internal tensions and management issues led to the band's disbandment in 1973.

Following the breakup of Medusa, members pursued various musical projects. John McCoy went on to have a successful career as a bassist, songwriter, and producer, notably working with Ian Gillan Band and Atomic Rooster. Other members remained active in the music scene in various capacities.

Medusa's music has been reissued on CD and vinyl, and continues to be appreciated by fans of classic progressive rock and hard rock. They are remembered for their strong musicianship, powerful vocals, and unique blend of genres.
