Maytime (1937 film)
Maytime is a 1937 American musical romance film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was directed by Robert Z. Leonard and starred Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. The film is a remake of the 1917 silent film of the same name, which in turn was based on the operetta Maytime, with music by Sigmund Romberg.
The story revolves around Marcia Mornay (MacDonald), a famous opera star, and Paul Allison (Eddy), a young American opera student. Marcia falls in love with Paul but sacrifices her own happiness to marry her longtime manager and patron, Nicolai Nazaroff (John Barrymore). Years later, Marcia discovers that Paul is still in love with her, and they face a difficult decision about their future. The film explores themes of love, duty, and sacrifice.
The film is known for its lavish production design, elaborate costumes, and beautiful music. It features several operatic selections, including excerpts from Czar and Carpenter by Albert Lortzing, as well as original songs. It was a critical and commercial success for MGM, solidifying MacDonald and Eddy's status as a popular screen duo. Maytime is considered one of their most memorable and beloved films.
